Dr. Callaghy's work deals with evolving patterns of international economic governance focusing on international financial institutions and NGOs, cross-regional and comparative analysis of the politics of debt and economic reform in the developing world, and on the historical development of states, bureaucracies, and capitalism. He has been a recipient of funding from the Ford Foundation, the Rockefeller Foundation, the National Science Foundation, the MacArthur Foundation, and the Institute for the Study of World Politics. In 1997-98 he was a fellow at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Scholars. Dr. Callaghy is currently working on a book about the Paris Club, the informal group of creditor countries that restructures developing country debt. He has held teaching positions at Berkeley, U.C., Santa Cruz, Penn State, and Columbia, and has been at Penn since 1988.
