Brendan O’Leary’s A Treatise on Northern Ireland has won the James S. Donnelly Sr. Prize for the best book in History & Social Science from the American Conference on Irish Studies.
The judges’ verdict was,
"Brendan O’Leary’s A Treatise on Northern Ireland, 3 vols (Oxford University Press, 2019) is a magisterial interdisciplinary work that will be an enduring resource for those interested in the history of Ireland, most especially issues relating to the legacy of colonialism, the North, the Troubles, and the peace process. Moreover, it deftly maps the Irish case onto wider debates in political science while illuminating the politics of deeply divided societies the world over. Immediately relevant to current discussions of Brexit and the prospect of a reunified Ireland, A Treatise on Northern Ireland represents the very best of both history and social science in Irish Studies today."
