Gabriel Salgado is a PhD candidate in the Department of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the Hic Rosa Collective. His work focuses on issues of race and colonialism in Latin America. His dissertation, "Politics in the Time of Race," traces the development of racial ideologies and temporalities in early modern Spain and Mexico. The project draws on original archival research carried out with the support of a Teece Fellowship. In it, he analyzes how race emerged from religious understandings of difference and argues that race played a crucial role in reshaping European conceptions of time and history. Gabriel has also been awarded a Dissertation Completion Fellowship and expects to defend his dissertation in Spring 2021.
