Website

After defending his dissertation at Penn in the summer of 2022, Nathaniel Shils will be a postdoctoral fellow at the UCLA Nazarian Center for Israel Studies during the 2022-2023 academic year. Previously, he was a visiting instructor in the Department of Political Science and Middle Eastern Studies Program at Bryn Mawr College.

He specializes in the politics of nationalism, ethnicity, and self-determination, with a regional focus on the Middle East that is informed by cross-regional comparative perspectives. Through a deep empirical study of Israeli and Palestinian politics since the Oslo peace process, his dissertation research examined patterns of diachronic variation, suboptimal adaptation, and coevolutionary dynamics in the strategies of states and separatist movements in self-determination conflicts.
